Troubleshooting Your Swimming Pool Pump

Publication date : Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015

Your swimming pool pump is the heart of your pool’s system. It needs proper capacity to turn over your pool’s entire volume of water every six hours or so, ensure that chemicals are properly mixed and the water stays clean. When your swimming pool pump in Jackson stops working, do not automatically assume it is broken. Sometimes you just need to do a little troubleshooting to get it back up and running. This is especially the case if it has not been used all winter.

Tips for Getting Your Swimming Pool Pump RunningM

Before replacing your swimming pool pump, try these troubleshooting tips to see if you can get it running once again.

  • Look for Obstructions – There is a strainer basket inside your pool pump. This is the last spot where debris is left and keeps it from entering the pump and damaging it. If your strainer is not regularly cleaned, it can prevent water from flowing and reaching the pump. Check your strainer and if there is debris present, clean it out.
  • Filter – If your filter has not been taken care of, it can obstruct water circulation. Check the pressure on your filter and make sure it is in line with the manufacturer’s recommendations. If not, you may need to backwash the filter to fix the issue. If the filter is too contaminated, empty the filter media and replace it with fresh media.
  • Air – Pumps can fill with air, creating an airlock inside the pump. If your pool’s water level dropped below the skimmer’s intake, then most likely your pool pump has drawn in air. By restoring the water levels, you can fix this. You may also need to check for a leaking O-ring in the chamber.
