Your swimming pool has many roles. It’s a hotspot for the kids to play in the summer. It’s a private place for you to workout. It’s also a source of relaxation and entertainment. But come winter, all these things fade away. Not by choice, of course, but it’s not exactly practical to go swimming during the winter, even when temperatures are mild. But, if you invest in a pool heater, you can enjoy your pool longer!

Benefits of Installing a Pool Heater

Let’s discuss a few of the key benefits to installing a heater in your swimming pool.

  • More from your investment. By heating your pool, you can swim comfortably in months where you wouldn’t otherwise be able to.
  • Comfortable workouts. If you love working out in your swimming pool, a heater will make you more comfortable. Water is already easy on the joints, and the additional heat will loosen stiff joints and muscles.
  • Boosted physical activity. If you’re tired of watching the kids sit on the couch all winter long, get them up and moving in the pool. It’s just a few steps away!

Types of Pool Heaters

Before buying a pool heater, be sure to do your research and know what options are available. Pool heaters are investments, and having one will change the way you use your pool. Since there are so many options available, it’s best to speak with your current pool maintenance company or a local pool installer. They can give you the best recommendations.

Here are the different types of pool heaters available.

  • Electric resistance heaters. These heaters use electric currents to generate heat. They are ideal for small pools because they require a lot of electricity. Electric resistance heaters are generally inexpensive to buy and environmentally friendly. On the flip side, they are costly to run, difficult to install and not energy efficient.
  • Gas heaters. Another option is a gas heater. Gas heaters burn natural gas or propane to create heat. They were the most widely-used pool heaters, though they aren’t as popular today because of higher gas prices. Gas heaters are inexpensive to purchase and heat the water quickly. However, they are expensive to operate, not energy efficient and not environmentally friendly.
  • Heat pumps. Heat pumps use electricity to bring heat to your swimming pool, and there are air-source and water-source models available. Heat pumps are becoming the most popular way to heat pools because of their energy efficiency, low operating costs and long lifespan. They are also environmentally friendly. The only drawback is that they are more expensive to purchase.
  • Solar heaters. A final option to look at is a solar heater, which uses solar panels to transfer heat to your water. The biggest benefit to solar heaters is that they require no operating costs since energy is generated from the sun. Solar heaters are energy efficient, environmentally friendly and have a long lifespan. But, they are costly to purchase, dependent on the sun and can look unattractive.
