Backwashing Your Pool Filter

Publication date : Saturday, April 12th, 2014

Cleaning your pool filter helps to maintain its function for safe, clean water that always looks inviting. If you have a sand filter, cleaning out your filter too often can be detrimental. Backwash the filter only when it has risen 10-15 lbs from the pressure reading after it was last cleaned. A diatomaceous earth filter should be cleaned slightly more often, after its pressure has risen 10 lbs from the clean value. To backwash this filter, move the switch between “filter” and “backwash” several times, allowing the filter to remain on each setting for a few moments before switching again. You may need to add more diatomaceous earth material after cleaning is complete. If your pool uses a cartridge filter, it should be removed and rinsed with a hose rather than backwashed. Wash your cartridge filter twice per pool season, and have it replaced every few years for the best performance.
